After 6 days of matches the winners will be decided and the prizes will be handed out at the Darsena this afternoon by the local officals....[ more ]
The results are in on the last day of sailing for the America's Cup but they are somewhat tainted because the Swedish Team was normally the winner for the races but there was an inspection of all the boats and the Swedish boat had a lot of extra water in the boat which was against the rules. It was a sad way to finish the races and it is a reminder of how the high stakes game of America's Cup racing can create high drama but also the unpleasant effects as well. It is not unheard of at all to have rules and lawyers determine the outcome.

The racing was interesting and there was a great start with all the boats on the line which is an impressive sight. Once started, the competition was pretty even and yet what made the difference today is what they call in sailing “a flyer”. Airplanes? no.
A flyer is when a boat goes way off to the side of the course on the chance they will get a lucky shift of wind which will send them closer to the mark. Well, the Spanish Team “took a flyer” today and came out going around the mark first when they were in the middle of the fleet before. To their credit, they were able to protect their lead throughout the rest of the race to become the local heroes.

They didn't win by much, but that's what made it exciting. After the dust had settled from the race the legal wranglings hadn't been decided yet. Once done though, and Luna Rossa was declared the winners, and she was towed into the winners circle for a champagne shower! (photo 7434). I was fun for your's to see the keel of Australlia II on display because the last time I saw it, it was attached to Australia II in Newport Rhode Island. (photo 7435). What made the keel so radical and allowed the Australians to win were the wings. When the boat leans over, heels, the flat part is supposed to stop the boat from slipping sideways. With the wings, it stops the slipping much much more and the boat can sail much closer upwind to the next buoy.

The Sunday public strolling through the America's Cup Village weren't aware the slipping keels or the legal troubles but were having a good time just looking around all the fancy sailing boats and super yachts tied up at the pier.
The next stop is in Malmo Sweden in August but certain teams like the New Zealanders had started packing up and the mast out was already out of their boat.
